acjwalker
Hello, This will be a long post as I want to be accurate with what I have to say. the problem we have is files are taking an EXTREMELY long time to open. This is what happened. We have just moved office so are on a new server. It has a new address. Our server has exactly the same network drive letter and structure. When we load a max file which was created before we moved the issue is it takes ages to open (sometimes over 40mins.) When it does we can see all the materials. The way we can open the file very quickly is when it is taking ages to load is disable the network card, the file will load very quickly. it obviously means that it cannot see the materials. If we then connect the network again and in the material editor we pick the material it will load the texture and if we go to the map we are using we can see it on the network. This is all great but has to be done on everytime we open the file. We can access the drive in explorer and find the textures. It is something to do with the drive. We are not sure what to do? We need to get this sorted as we are unable to work like this. Please Help Andrew
Tommy L
It sounds like a windows problem. Check to see if the drive has directory caching(?) turned on. 40 mins sounds extreme though. Are you just experiencing problems in Max or in any other apps also?
Nils Norgren
One likely culprit is UNC mapping, depending on setup, max files will use mapping that is associated with volume NAMES, not drive letter, there is a chance that max is looking for all the linked assets at the old name and then finally finding them at the new location, after exhaustive search. One way to test is to load a file (waiting for the long load time) and then open the asset tracker and changing all the assets to be "relatively" mapped, save the file and open it again. Hope this gets you on a road to solving the problem. -Nils
