Dimitris Tolios
Jealous of those "shiny" 4K displays? Dell redefines envy with the UP2715K, a 5K monitor featuring an astounding 5120x2880 resolution into a 27-inch Crystal Clear panel. That's roughly 14.7 megapixels, versus the measly 8.3 megapixels in 4K panels. Yes, 70 percent more pixels. Can you even run this over DisplayPort? Of course not. To push this many pixels, you need to use not one, but two DisplayPort 1.2 ports. The GPU used for this demo was the K5000, and you will be pressed to find an nVidia card with 2x DP outside the Quadro line. This is a Firepro / 79xx / R9 / Quadro monitor. With 32-inch 4K panels came in at $3,500 last summer, it is actually not a bad deal! Source
numerobis
Very cool! But 27"?!? Like with 4K and 24"/27" I think the screen has to be bigger to be useful for 3D. But great to see that 4K is already outdated ...now they can bring the prices down for this old tech and i can buy one
Dimitris Tolios
Imagine how bad scaling can be on that =) But yeah, after getting proper support from OSes, would probably still be more of a photo editing / design tool than for modelling. Unless you use it as a 4K with built-in AA. Probably we will see some "retina" desktop monitor from Apple using that panel.
eidam655
actually this one http://accessories.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&sku=225-4201 still seems more attractive to me. has anyone given it a try?
Jeff Mottle
I just completed a review of NEC's 4K unit here: http://www.cgarchitect.com/2014/09/nec-24-4k-ea244uhd-review You're not likely going to want to run the display at the actual 4K resolution at that size unless it's only being used as second monitor for video playback and editing. In my tests however, if you scale it back to a more acceptable res the pixel density makes for an absolutely gorgeous and crisp display.
branskyj
I myself am waiting for the upcoming New LG 34UC97- 34", 3440x1440 and is absolutely gorgeous. I know Dell has announced its own version of it, but LG is much more beautiful in my eyes. As for the UP2715K and its 5120x2880 in a 27" space- its quite remarkable but 27", really? One would have to tweak the scaling and then what about the programs that don't scale that well or at all? I guess it is not meant for the regular Joe. Anyway- it is great to see that PC monitors are getting more love from the manufacturers.
Dimitris Tolios
I agree with both of you, Julian and Jeff. I personally use a 1440p 27" + 24" 1080p @ home / 2x 24" 1200p @ work. The 1440p has excellent pixel density: text and old UI is not too small, but detail separation remains crisp / sharp, single lines in CAD are easily selectable with a variety of mouse sensitivities / user experience etc. 24" @ full 4K is nearly unusable as a main monitor for some applications imho, 27" @ 4K is better, but still can have issues with scalability. 5K seems to be insane in anything but "hardware AA" mode, like Apple 3K laptop "retina" monitors were doing from the get-go in an almost brilliant implementation. "Its not how many pixels you have, is what you can do with it" =) 34" 3.5K appears to be a sweet spot in my eyes too! Too bad 27+24 is already "wide" for me - I sit close to them for the most part, and I cannot visually control both screens, to the point of thinking getting a 19" 1440x900p IPS, and using it as a secondary monitor @ portrait mode just for that. I don't edit videos in ways that would care having 1080p or better for the secondary display - I just need a 2nd monitor for reference stuff and/or maybe a movie/tv show playing in the background to keep me company @ Work I need to check emails and again having more than one CAD/3D apps/images open for reference. And most software / OSs don't really help organizing multiple windows / programs in just one monitor, regardless of resolution: this 2nd guy regardless of size/real estate is invaluable atm. I'm just afraid that the 34" would kick it @ the side too far for comfortable visual control of both displays...
