Studio/Institution: Personal work
Genre: Other
Software: 3ds max, vray, world machine, forestpack and PS
Description:

So, next personal project in line. House has been modeled from archdaily and the environment (based on a picture I saw in a mountainbike magazine) was my first try with World Machine and - man thats fun!

This is pretty much the raw render with a few quick adjustments in PS (its very dark atm, but that kind of play will be done later).

Just wanted to share this first draft and air out my ideas to the next "phase". Your feedback is always much appreciated.

(One more exterior view and a single interior is the plan, but we'll see!)

I would get rid of the canoe, its a nice idea in real life but for the purposes of the image its un-needed clutter. I wouldnt busy up the roof either, I'd maintain your low light levels, get more contrast in the sky and illuminate the interior, see where that takes you.

Thanks for the input Tom and Scott.

I'll give it a try with removing the exterior clutter and play with some interior lighting (will be a good opportunity to model some furniture to the library and prep it for the interior shot too).

Scott, regarding the vegetation. How do you approach the setup/testing for vegetation colour variation? Since im on a laptop it takes ages to fiddle with the forestmat in forestpack (slow viewport and rendertimes), so I think my approach would be to add some hue/saturation adjustments in PS and experiment with different masks/overlays.

Also, has any one tried using beacon noise maps for the bump on water? Im getting some weird reflections in the glass objects. The normal max noise map works okay.

For the forest variation just do the "From gradient" option, imput some desaturated yellows and greens and set the values to 40-80 or something and set the slider in the middle between item and element. Should give you a nice starting point. As for the viewport speed, you can set the density of forest objects in the display tab, so if you are happy with your grass you can set it to 1% or something, and thus speedup your viewport. The same goes for trees or whatever else you might have going on in your scene in other forest objects. For water you should either try out the phoenix FD water that is all the rage right now, or you could try to use a mix map to blend between a noise map and a wave/ripple map in the bump slot of your water material so you get some variation in windspeed/waves across your water. Good luck!

Thanks for the tips Nicolai.

Here is my final result:

On to the next project!

Jens, this should be perfect scene to make some variations in water surface.

Use some maps for small bumps and reflection variations. You know, every lake has some turbulations in water surface even there is no wind at all.

Thanks Jay.

Zdravko:

Yeah, I tried installing the free pheonixFD plugin and have a go with that, but the install kept failling for some reason. So I just finished the project instead and am now busy with a new one. I always encounter new challanges when I start a new project, so I think I am learning more the more projects I do (compared to focusing too much on a single project). It is all for building up a portfolio.

But I'll definately try your tips next time I'll have som water in my scene or redo this one at some point.
