alissonbalinski
Hello, I've been reading the discussions about the calibrators and I have a related question: does anyone use any special software for display calibration? I am new and a bit lost, sorry if it's the wrong sub-forum.
branskyj
I am pretty sure each hardware calibrator comes with a CD/DVD with the appropriate software. My Spider 4 Elite does... But in case you don't have it maybe it will be available for download through the manufacturer's website. Not sure if you can run third party software with a given hardware calibrator though. maxwood
I believe there's monitor calibration software built in to windows. Have a look in control panel. It means you'll have to do it by eye though. I use a Spider Elite which comes with its own monitor calibration software.
emmamolenaar
Not sure if you can run third party software with a given hardware calibrator though. Hi, I use PressProof and it supports lots of measurement devices, so I'd say it depends on the manufacturer of the SW. I'm not a big expert, but I used the spyder SW for calibration and I can say that the quality of display calibration is much better when I started using PressProof. Anyway it's a matter of taste and your needs.
alissonbalinski
Thank you all for the feedback! I don't have a calibrator yet, but I can borrow the Gretag Macbeth Eye-One display 2. Emma, do you think the SW you recommend will work with it? I'd give it a try.

Emma, do you think the SW you recommend will work with it? I'd give it a try. I don't think you should "experiment" with different software(s). Colorimeters come with their own, I think the Eye-One has the "Eye One Match" software, which was later renamed to i1Display I think. Was discontinued back in 2009, but you still get Win 7 support with it. Try to download the latest version when you borrow it, and use that. emmamolenaar
Thank you all for the feedback! do you think the SW you recommend will work with it? It is listed among the compatible devices as far as I can see: http://www.qubyx.com/images/brochure/PressProofGuide.pdf
alissonbalinski
Thanks everyone for your advice. I think I'll choose PressProof, the help-texts are very helpful for me and I'll be able to use my device. I contacted the guys from qubyx to make sure it'll work, and they say it will. notamondayfan
You need hardware, not software. I have the xrite i1, and it's a sound investment. I recalibrate every few weeks, as monitor colour drifts, especially on older monitors. Doing monitor calibration by eye is as good as driving by a speed camera with no speedometer! alissonbalinski
Doing monitor calibration by eye is as good as driving by a speed camera with no speedometer! Hello, Maybe I didn't make myself clear, sorry. I'm not going to calibrate by eye - I'll have a calibrator/puck/measurement device Gretag Macbeth Eye-One display 2. notamondayfan
Why not use the software that comes with the hardware then?
