Please look at these images:

Its about metal sheet walls with small pyramidal section.

My question is:

HOW would you make these walls, if they are crowded with openings?

By polymodeling or using some displacement maps?

Displacement maps can cause black holes in the end of faces?

I did this recently. Definitely worked best to make a whole wall and then just boolean out the openings all at once. For close up this worked best, but mid to far distances I would recommend exaggerating the depth a bit. The lighting didn't pronounce the corrugation well in my image.

Also, especially on close ups, the material is going to want to have a higher subdiv and blurry reflection than an optimal render time would like. For best results I suggest just eat the time and get a clean render. This amount of detail can be very noisy
