Corey Beaulieu
I don't know if I understand your question, but I will try: When you instance an object, or proxy it for that matter, Max only has to think about the object once. After that, all it does is save new transform information about the instanced object as it has already loaded the geometry. This should help explain why a single chair can be one size and 0 instances not much more. It may take longer to redraw the scene or update the layer manager, but it isn't the same as having 60 copies in a single scene. This is a conceptual understanding. I doubt that it is the exact way things work, but it is why we all suggest Instances and Proxies.
