Sketchrender
At last my company have decided to invest in 3D studio max. I have been a formz user for 5 years, and have been asking for a more powerfull package for a long time. I am delighted, I really am. Now I have to find somewere to puchase it. Any advise would be greatfull. I am in ireland. This is not a which software is better, it's simply a way of improving and learning more in the business, and file sizes were getting to be big with microstation being the main 2d software. So learning advise anyone, what do to and what not to do. night phil
Brian Cassil
couple of questions: Do you plan on using Max to model with? Do you plan on investing in a rendering plugin?
mbr
I still believe FormZ is a much better modeler for arch viz than Max (and Max is what I am using everyday). Max is great for furniture and small things, but FMZ is much faster for buildings. However, Max and it's plugins (I prefer Final Render) are far better renderers. I would still use FormZ to model with and Max to render with.
Sketchrender
I believe formz to be one of the best modelers too. But it lacks the power to do big big work, and the rendering is so limited and slow. I intend to model and render all in the one programme. What plug in would you recomend to render with, final render, brazil, or vray? what's the price difference? phil
Crazy Homeless Guy
well, with dwg file link, now standard with 7, you can use formZ as basically an extended modeler with max. you can model your building, and have it update with the click of a button in max, and have all of the textures update, ect... it is really nice. here is a msg i sent out to our formz/max users in the company, explaining the best way i have found to set up our file system. Sketchrender
crazy guy thanks for that. I always model that way anyway. But it is good to know. I want to get away from formz , because it won't handel, the 2d base drawing well at all, from micrstation as a dwg. I have for example a lrgeisland model and about 25 cottages on it each cottage is 435kb with roof windows doors cills glass ect. and a conference centre and trees. In Formz the 3D file is only 8.5mb, not bad , but it is a nightmare to do anything with and i have a gig of memory. The biggest model i can handel is 22mb that's it, with everything stripped out. So this the reason I need to be able to handel big files odf lots of appartments and all the detail involved. What are you using for trees rpc? thaey a major problem. thanks again. phil

Max is a giant memory hog. I'm not sure how it compares to FormZ, but I'm betting you are going to need more than 1 gig of ram. 2 gigs would probably be a lot better. Sketchrender
Form z is seriosly lacking a few things thjat i would like to use. All the best work is sent out of the office and it comes back looking fantasic, well most of it. IAnd i get asked why can't we do work like that? Insulting and annoying. All the big companies are using max, and formz is not up to the task anymore. Modeling it is, but for sheer mass, I had one project 12 building on a site, all wanted to be detailed, no it would not handle it. So I hope it lets me merge very large files, and render very large files too, that's my major problem. phil
