philippelamoureux
I've searched the web without much success...Someone proposed it in 2010 on octane forums...thread got locked up...google...nada!!! A rendering co-op. Especially for GPU renderers. I proposed the idea on the octane render forums since gpu cloud computing is pretty much non-existant right now (some solutions are in beta, or a bit complicated to use). Some people have alot of computing power at the tips of their fingers. I'm not necessarily talking about offering rendering for free, contracts would be kept secrets. No biggie. Just have a place where you can quickly find people to help you!!! I guess for Vray users it's no big deal since there are a bazzilion render farms, but the Octane community seems to be small. There are other gpu renderers coming out too. It will get more popular eventually. Where are the god damn gpu farms lol? Basically the idea is just to build a big database, spreadsheet or website where people register and tell others what hardware they can provide, their availability, their contact infos, etc. Nothing too fancy! Just a place where you know you will find help when you need the extra horsepower!!! What do you guys think of that idea?
branskyj
I thought OTOY and NVidia were developing a GPU render farm service together, what happened with that?
philippelamoureux
I thought OTOY and NVidia were developing a GPU render farm service together, what happened with that? Well, 1st of all, they're slow...slowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. I think they announced that in 2013. X.IO just opened in beta, it's working but no sight of octane cloud at all. Worst thing, imo, is the communication. We don't know much about how it's gonna work, the pricing, the specs, etc. Basically, the way I understand it, we still only can rely on amazon EC2 which isn't the easiest (or user friendly) thing to set up. I want to use Octane on 100% on my projects, but for now, unless I buy an nvidia VCA (25k to 50k$), videos and animations aren't going to be possible! branskyj
Ah, I see. Unfortunate really since Octane is a great piece of software. I only stopped using my copy because the CG industry here in UK doesn't use it (or if it does it's on a really small scale) but I can see how it could be useful if the situation was the other way around or for freelancers maybe... Anyway, I hope NVidia and Otoy finally make something happen in 2015 since the demo OTOY pulled some time ago was incredible.
philippelamoureux
Yea I'm planning to use Octane only. I really like the ''what you see is what you get'' mentality. For me, it's much easier to get the results I want with Octane than with V-ray. I'm now trying to find ways to overcome some of the disadvantages of the gpu render vs the industry standard. Biggest downside is the limited amount of plugins and of course the render farms!!! We'll see how it goes. I might eventually give Corona a try if I really can't find a gpu cloud rendering service! Unless I win at loto and buy a couple VCA's lol!!!
branskyj
He-he, with a lotto win you can buy 200 of these bad boys Happy rendering, mate.
