notamondayfan
Hello! Time has come to upgrade my workstation, and I have a few queries. First, I will be ditching my AMD X6 setup. and I will be using this as a file server. I will drop the Ram to 8gb, remove the graphics card. It will be using 2 hard-drives. It currently has a 750w PSU, should this be swapped for a less powerful one, or will it be OK at 750w? For the new workstation I will be taking the 16gb ram from the X6 and the graphics card (a GTX 570 2gb), and I will be using... i7 4790k http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00KPRWAX8/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_S_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=65SQESIAIJU7&coliid=I1WTTH29HQMA7Y Gigabite motherboard http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00D5FA94Y/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_S_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=65SQESIAIJU7&coliid=I3UT05JZZ5IHS7 Corsair 600w PSU http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00ALYOTTI/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=65SQESIAIJU7&coliid=I3LM3U3RGVVHX6&psc=1 Crucial SSD 512GB http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00IRRDHVW/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=65SQESIAIJU7&coliid=I1X98B5NGIWVVS&psc=1 Antec case http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B009LDNTOG/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=65SQESIAIJU7&coliid=I1NBHVWS0DYL7P I will re-use an existing drive as a 2nd drive too. So does anyone have any recommendations or suggestions that they might do differently? Also will a 600w PSU be OK? I don't plan on running a massive graphics card in the future. Cheers, Dean
RyderSK
You're completely fine keeping the current PSU for filestation. You're after all after salvaging what you currently have and I did the same. I made file server from my original i7 2600k :- ) Turned of HT, underclocked it and voila. With original 650W, it' just underused. For you new workstation, yes, 600W is more than enough. Or you can alternatively, take your 750W to Workstastion, and buy new low one for file-server. Not much to add or discuss, perhaps only personal sympathies towards brands.
