How about this for a new build

Recommended Posts

In our country we say (free translation): "take it (if you can afford it) and let it sit doing nothing". I don't know if you really catch the drift, but sometimes, it's not what you 're seeking or what suits you best that matters, but what you are willing to pay in total. Juraj was right; Buying a cheaper card would save him only a small percentage of his total budget, and no one knows what other use the future will bring (gaming, gpu bound applications etc). 750Ti is a perfect choice for smaller budgets (under 1000£ in this case).

As for the 960, I am curious to see its real life performance with the 128-bit interface and the 2gb of vram (not so much in the game section, as in the various software that makes use of gpus). Nvidia claims that improved color and texture compression will balance the smaller bandwidth (it was expected to have a 256-bit interface). We'll see.

The 960 does look very uninteresting. Strangely after Numerobis mentioning Ti versions, bit of googling does reveals various claims (link) of Ti version(s) ranging from 256bit bus to being cutdown GM206. Wild claims happen quite often, although it could be true, who knows. Very enthousiast-oriented card though.

I'v posted like 3 time and none of the came up i have no idea why anyway......

1. The budge really is not that big and will be quickly disappear + wasting money is inherently dumb!!

2. If you want this build to last 4 year leave 1000k in the bank and buy a new cpu and MB in 2 year ( skylake 12 cores off goodness)

3. That cpu cooler will not get a decent OC you will need a bigger one!

4. VGA wise what monitors are u using? think about connectivity may justify such a overpriced card for your uses.

5. Have no monitor check out dells new 34inch curved screen imo best offering at the moment forget 4k to many issues.

6. Other extras, remember you never have to look at ur MB CPU VGA ever again so make sure the things that u look at and use all day keyboard mouse and monitor are good its well worth it.

7. Thats a rather small SSD i would always recommend at least 512GB single SDD or raid 0

GL mate......... and yer i buy junk to just put in boxers all the time doesn't make it any less stupid........ so don't get a 970.... and the 960 is a piece of junk so ignore that

The forum does have its occasional issues it seems. From missing posts..to refreshing page after hitting submit once you wrote long message..hate when that happens.

2-3k is pretty seizeable. Surely you can buy more enthousiast oriented stuff that with diminishing return in value will increases exponentially budget but that is hardly priority for workstation.

Also investing small additional budget (100-150 euro) for something that will provide increased versatility over 3-4 year lifespan, is not wasting money, it's exchanging for counter-value. And very reasonable.

3. That cpu cooler will not get a decent OC you will need a bigger one!

For average chip capable of 4.2-4.3 GHz clock under decent voltage, any 240mm CLC cooler or big air tower will suffice. "Bigger" as in 360/480, would not necessarily bring much advantage, although it's never bad choice. But he doesn't go wrong with current option either.

{I am personally not fan of these Corsairs much}

Even the cheapest cards have enough ports to use these days.

It's actually pretty cool, personally like the LG version best. Could prove to be less then optimal for architectural stuff for it slight cylindrical distortion of orthogonal lines. This discomfort was already mentioned in few reviews, but for multimedia and games, it's fantastic.

One can wait forever. If you need workstation, buy it today, unless the next best thing comes very next week/month depending on your patience. If one was to judge by evolution over past 4 years ( Gulftown-)Sandy-)Ivy-Haswell, their E versions), it moved quite a little in performance relatively. At no point it made much sense to hold on buying. And neither does it now.

7. Thats a rather small SSD i would always recommend at least 512GB single SDD or raid 0

256GB is pretty sweatspot if used for software primarily, 512GB is nicer, but still not enough to used for files. Both are reasonable choices.

..beer ?

I had the same issues when I first registered in the forum. Nothing to worry about. The first 10 posts are subjected to moderation, especially if they contain links etc.

As for the budget, I wish I could have 3000£ (=~4000€) to spend in a workstation. I would build 2 of them ... and keep some money for debts and taxes...:)

Well clearly we disagree on most things except for beer and 34in screens so make sure to get those two OP (btw the lines bs is not an issue with the monitors and LG 34's have major bleed issues at the moment so dont get one although they do look better imo)

4.2-4.3 GHz thats barely an OC

Ton's of gpu can't handle more than 2 x 2k monitors remember that require DP or equivalent.... personally I would get 3x 2k screens if i had that much cash!

O and that's tons of cash for a PC agreed still its like trying to buy a large house in London with 2mill, ton's of cash sure but don't expect to much if you want to buy a Bentley as well........

5960X comes out of the box with a multiplier of 30 (x100MHz bckl) and a turbo boost of 3.5GHz. Taking this up to 4.3 (0.9-1.3GHz) is certainly not a modest oc. I'd say it is a mid/high oc. And oc'ing an 8c/16t cpu that much is totally different from oc'ing a 4c/8t or a 6c/12t cpu by the same amount. There is much more heat released perspectively as cores grow in number.

So this is my final build, what do you think? I've just upped the CPU cooler really.
