your experiences on r9 290 AMD GPU

Recommended Posts

79xx and R9 GPUs were always very good at OpenCL benchmarks, like Luxmark, beating handily the 5xx/6xx/7xx GPUs, including the GTX Titan (the 7950 was beating the Titan easily).

Newer 9xx GTX are very good at OpenCL by comparison.

This unfortunately is the equivalent of comparing apples to oranges, as OpenCL is NOT used by 3DS max, and VRay RT GPU's implementation of OpenCL was not doing AMD GPUs any favors. Took ages for AMD cards to work with VRay RT GPU, and even when this was possible, a R9 290X / W9000/9100 barely manage to keep up with nVidia flagships, even tho the same cards score notably higher than equiv. nVidia cards in almost every other OpenCL accelerated app (e.g. Adobe Suite).

So, if your focus is 3DS Max, regardless of VRay RT, a R9 290 will be great value for money and do ok. I expect it to be better and cheaper than the upcoming GTX 960, which through the leaks is almost sure will be much weaker than the 970 (by comparison to what 760 was vs. the 770).

For all around performance, including VRay RT GPU, I would probably shoot for a GTX 970 - would not bother with the 980.
