Smoothing polygons

In edit poly and edit mesh there is a thing called smoothing groups. Select the faces you want to be smooth and set them to the same smoothing group. Alternatively, you could apply a smooth modifier. This is just to make the object appear smooth. If you want the actual geometry to be more smooth/more segments, you will have to either try with a turbosmooth modifier or a meshsmooth, or most likely chamfer by hand.

Hi Nicolai,

I already tried smoothing it with the editpoly options but still it looks bad at render.

and turbosmooth will only mess up the hard edges of the geometry....so the only option is modeling it from the beginning in max.

Still it looks a bit strange to me working like that when so many 3d artists import their SU models into max.

Smooth modifier with "auto smooth" checked should be fine for this. Do you have a render you can post of this area? Maybe you are dealing with some double faces or something else. You can try adding some edge loops with "flow connect" in graphite tools but I don't think it will work well with that imported geometry.

Just to check: In edit poly mode there are vertex, edge, face and i guess element selection modes (cant remember what it is called). If you use the element (the mode that is supposed to select all faces that are connected), does it in fact select all the faces that are supposed to be smooth? Also, are all the faces facing the right way? If they are alternating between facing inside and out, that might cause some problems?

Sometimes even if the vertices are welded sometimes the faces don't connect.

Try doing a Edge Ring Selection, if it works and goes across then this is not the issue, but if it stops then this might be the issue.

Another thing is the normals facing the right way, this can affect the smoothing groups.

Check if the edges on the curved part have 3 faces attached to it, this normally doesn't happen but sometimes can mess with your smoothing groups.

Simple check - Check if your view-port is set to faceted, or the material to Faceted this can be a simple mistake but often overlooked when working.

if this is geometry that has been imported from SU i think you have to weld vertices first.

Yes, this is what I do every time. Anything that is curved, weld the verts (convert geo to edit poly, select all the verts, right-click weld threshold and set it to 0, then click up once and then weld, you should see the vert count basically drop in half) and apply a smooth modifier with Auto Smooth, works fine.
