liorsturlesi
Hi guys, I'm having some hard time modeling this wall in 3ds max. Usually i model in editpoly (line, extrude, editpoly, shell and so on...), but modeling this arched wall is problematic in that particular modeling technic. I tried making this curved line and push this part backwards but couldn't do it in polymode Any good advice? Thanks. Attached an image
Corey Beaulieu
Not straying from you method, you could draw a line that curves backward, but also follows the "dip" in the material. Then when you extrude it you can either extrude with segments or use an Edit Poly Modifier to create your horizontal segments. The base of your wall will not be flat. Once you have all of your windows cutout and your wall largely built as a plane, then use Vert Mode and the buttons that say "Make Planar" to select the bottom row of Verts and Make Planar in the Z. They will flatten out and then you can adjust them onto place. After that, add your Shell Modifier. This works in my head at least. It's how I would start. liorsturlesi
Sorry, What do you mean "dip" in the material, didn't understand... and the base of the wall has to be flat, not completely sure i understood your technic here. Thanks...
Nicolai Bongard
Is the problem trying to make a wall that is curved and also has that rounded/wave like top? Start drawing a spline in the top viewport where you want your wall to go. Make sure to add verteces/points/whatever they are called at the start and the end of your wave shape. Shape it in front/side view like you want it (with bezier corners). Then select the whole line and shift drag it down to the bottomn of the wall. Align the verteces so that they are all flat and follow your floor. Then press the cross section button and select your two lines. They should now both be connected with vertical lines. Then add a surface modifier and then a shell modifier. If the wave is not smooth enough, go back in the stack to your line, go to the interpolation tab and increase the steps. tried to upload picture here: http://imgur.com/XLQHWYt
Nicolai Bongard
Btw, a small correction, for the smoothness the interpolation does not seem to work on the extruded geometry, so then you have to go into the Surface modifier and increase the Patch Topology number. The disadvantage of this is that it generates more segments to the straight ends of the wall as well, so your best bet might be to chamfer the curved polys on the wave shape.
