curious whether anyone has been using sidefx houdini, select etc with rendering gis+landscape+architectecture presentations?

or trying the houdini 6 apprentice offering (global illumination, renderman and mantra)?

wow, at $17,000 for full whack thats like buying a top grade Xeon just for playing solitaire :)

i seriously doubt any one here studying architecture has access (if ever even seen) this software. if they have i'd be highly dubious on the legal aspects!

There is indeed one very recent member on the forum here who could awnser some questions, given a bit of encouragement - it says in his profile he is a student in Sweden (must have lots of cash up there for cg education :) ). But i couldn't get an email address, so i went into my archives and guess what. I did manage to find one email here:

We discussed hard drive choices and workstation building at these places also, so you might catch up with him somewhere or other on the web too. Cg architect and Storage review (124 post) allows sending private messages, if you register over there.

This app is too expensive for practicle architectural use. There's plenty of alternative and cheaper software.
no, i was referring to houdini select ($1,299 USD)

were you thinking of adding some excitement to your buildings with bones and a little bit of IK (houdini master: $17,000 USD) ???

garethace, thanks for the links.

they were helpful in themselves re hardware.

i was interested in houdini select (v6) implementation of vops, particles and global illumination.

how's the emerald isles?

Hi ferox!

You probably know this already, but you could try out Houdini 6.0 Master or Select for as long as you like, with few restrictions. You can download the Houdini apprentice 6.0. Please visit SideFX's website here for more info. There is a forum at that site, but the the most active forum is likely the Odforce forum. 3Dbuzz has a couple of Houdini-related forums as well. And there's an interactive "Houdini class" at 3Dbuzz.

I think the forum link is just exactly what was needed Mistyk thanks. Tell me though, how big into computers are the guys in scandanavia at the moment? I was in Helsinki late last year, and saw the big building on campus there with lots and lots of SGI boxes and so on - very impressive. How are opportunities in Sweden for the third level guy doing computer graphics?

If this was in reference to me; Actually I'm taking a Master of Science degree in Engineering Physics at KTH (Royal Institute of Technology). And it's free :D .

BTW, what's the emerald isle?

BTW, what's the emerald isle? Dear old Ireland. Did you get into computers after your science degree? I mean, does the scientific, computer programming side of cg software interest you that much? I notice houdini is available for alot of open sourse types of platforms.

Have you ever visited the povray website?

You can download the Houdini apprentice 6.0
thanks for that, they were good links.

so, i now have apprentice, downloaded 3dbuzz houdini 101 modules, perused the sidefx manuals, and looked at the caustics vid (sidefx) re global illumination settings.

houdini 6 uses shaders for the photon maps? it seems an incongruous approach (ie. unintuitive) to global illumination? is it efficient?

they will take it from you eventually (high swedish income tax)?

(anything.... eek2.gif ...to pop the balloon :???: !??)

Before.

What I like about Houdini is that it allows for a procedural and mathematical approach to animation. Vector and matrix algebra can be used to transform objects and points. And the Channel Operators (CHOPs) provide a means for controlling just about anything through single-variable calculus.

Since version 6 only very recently became non-beta, I haven't played much with the G.I. features, so I'm afraid I can't be of any help in that area. You might try the Odforce forums, in which there have been some discussions on G.I.

Very much so :)

I did download the version 6, but i was wondering if it needs to dial up a server for licensing? The machine i was using is not online, so i could not get the windows version started.

Thanks for the explanation about animation/Houdini... i was just wondering about Houdini as an application - i used read some articles about it in cg world magazine.
