Strange license message

Has anyone ever seen this message come out of Max before?

"This file was created using a student version of autodesk 3ds max. use of this data by an educational institution or for commercial purposes is a violation of your autodesk 3ds max license agreement. "

I received this model that I need to import yet when I try to do it the geometry is really messed up. My guess is that as a result of the violation of my license it renders the model unusable. Does anyone know if that's what happening and if there's any way to fix it?

I'm not sure but it might depend on what Max version it's from. I'm still with 2012 and i got the same message once (from someone i considered hiring for sub-contracting) and it was just the message, the scene was fine.

Perhaps the model itself is not good. Also if it's just one object, you might not need a whole Max scene. You might ask for it to be exported in another format like .obj

If it's a personal project of course. I'm not encouraging using a student version for commercial use.

Good luck with it.

Well it is exactly what the message said, that scene or something in that scene was created with an student version of 3D Max, so if this is a paid project it should not be used. You need to contact the person who send you the model and explain, you can't use any of that scene for any commercial job.

I received a few time CADs scenes or Max scenes from some clients that worked with foreign companies before, they came with that in the file. Surprise!!! ;P

Even in the Architectural company that I work for we received a file made with a student version to be rendered, our IT/CAD guy was screaming down the aisle "do not save that file in the server"

oh what it remember me, do not save that file in your server or work station mixed with other of your Max files, it will spread that message like a virus in your other files, do not try to merge or import in one of your scenes.

spread like a virus?! I doubt it. I've had students send me files to look at, this message pops up, but only on the files that came from the student, and never "spread".

As for the files being usable, they opened fine on my Max (2014 design), so it might be a save issue with your files.

It is true, What our CAD person explained, was that almost every element of that AutoCAD architecture or 3D Max design file that we received, it did have a code inside that will trigger that message every time you open that file or some part of it, so if you think in a large company some one will open that file, use as reference or model from it, copy layers or families or groups and that way that warning message will spread all though our network.

If you are a solo artist, this will more concentrated of course, but if you copy a tree or something that was modeled it could potentially maintain that warning message.

I am not guessing I am not trying to invent a story, this happened before to us, so I just passing the word.
