mrjackel
Being a cg forum this might not be the best place to ask, but some of you may have experience with this. I've been asked to do some architectural visioning. I'm basically to come up with some concepts for a development, but at present the plot is inaccessible, on a steep slope, and is heavily overgrown in parts. I wondered what my best options are for getting info on the land. I have a registry map that outlines the plot, and also the imagery from google earth. But it would be very useful to have more detailed info and height values. No surveyor is being brought in at this point, if at all. Thought I'd put this out there in hope of a few suggestions. I was considering flying a drone over it.
Francisco Penaloza
DEM data from that area may help, or even sketchup terrain will be enough for this early stage. If they want to go serious about it, Hire a surveyor.
Scott Schroeder
Google Earth gives you the elevation heights in the status bar when you hover over an area. That and the 3d topo model from SketchUp should get you 95% in the ballpark. A drone would be a waste of time at this point.
mrjackel
Great I didn't know that. Glad I posted here. The plot is covered in trees and heavy foliage. Would this not give google earth the wrong height values?
Scott Schroeder
It might skew it a bit, as I'm not 100% sure how the Googs gets all of it's height info, but in the visioning phase it is close enough to get you what you need.
Chris MacDonald
Buy an Ordnance Survey map in whichever format you require (.dwg I assume) and go from there. You pay based on the area of land you require data for. You might even be able to get it with contour data too (though whether this is a chargeable extra I'm not sure).
