importing rhino into max

is powertranslator from npower software the only solution to get rhino nurbs into max perfectly?

i tried to import some simple filleted rhino-objects directly into max through iges, and convert them to meshes within max, but the resulting objects seem quite distorted.

for comparison i tried a long way round and saved the rhino file as ACIS first, which i imported into autocad and saved as dwg. then i imported this acad-file into max and the result was much more convincing.

is this normal behaviour?

i attached an example.

the first image shows the original imported nurbs-geometry with tesselation set to high. if i convert this object to an editable mesh i get a result as seen in the middle image. it seems as if the surfaces were all separate. even after applying smooth or vertex weld afterwards, the result always sucks and doesn't get smooth anymore.

but if i import acad-solids the result is much smoother as seen in the right image.

are there some settings i am missing for converting nurbs to mesh?

thanks for any hint!

Guten tag Olaf!

I have the same problem as you, i simply cant find any file format that rhino will export in "normal way" to some render program. The best solution I find is the Translators from NPower like you also said, but you also get a huge file on just one object witch is pain in the a..

just dont now...wouldnt like to leave Rhino...People help Us!!!

Hey,

you need to apply a smooth-modifier in max after importing the mesh.

Smooth > turn on Auto-smooth, leave 30° as is, should do fine.

Depending on the file-format you choose when importing you can also apply a smooth on import. I get best results when exporting from rhino to a .dwg-format and then importing that to max. (with 3ds i get a used to get a lot of problems with mis-oriented fares and missing parts)

Hope this helps,

Lieven

Generally,

you can't expect it to import and be ready to render, as those nice nurbs get meshed in the process. Another must-use is 'optimise'.

I normally import the model in 4/5 times, with different parts on different detail settings, but all rather high. Then I apply optimise to the parts I need less detail. Then smooth.

the problem is, that i don't want to mesh my model already in rhino, but prefer it meshed in 3dsmax. therefore i look for a way to get my nurbs out of rhino, and somehow into max. if i try to import iges into max i mostly get these strange separate surfaces as seen in my attachment.

i prefer very optimized meshes, as i use them for interactive models. if i export my rhino models as meshes the following happens, please see my posting in the rhino group:

importing acis into acad would be a nice alternative, but i lose all layer-information. so i hope there is still another possibility.
