Is Direct3D 10 the Newest DX Driver Available for 3dsMax 2011?

Recommended Posts

I'm fed up with the lag in viewport response I constantly get using Direct 3D 9. (even with brand new scenes)

Open GL gives me immediate response when panning, zooming, etc., but generates various anomalies to surface and material appearance - making things sometimes randomly disappear.

I'm just wondering if a newer version of the DirectX driver would make the lag go away. Direct3D 9 is more stable than 10, but Max doesn't show any newer options than 10, even though I've installed newer ones.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hey Michael,

do you get lag in all of your scenes- light and heavy in terms of geometry and number of objects?

I know 3DS Max got much better with their latest releases (2014 was much, much better than the older ones) in terms of viewport performance. I remember how atrociously lagy was Max 2013 with large number of shapes (CAD drawings) and then Max 2014 came and I no longer had to think about suicide :)

So maybe it's not so much about which version of Direct3D you use inside Max but about which version of Max you use. Although Autodesk claims 2015 and 2016 also brought viewport speed increase I haven't noticed that yet. 2014 was definitely worth the upgrade though.

As for the display driver- I can only assume the latest one will be better. I am on Direct3D 11 and get the viewport lag only with very, very scenes.

Maybe download Max 2014 and test it?

Good luck, mate.

Come to think of it- are you using a 3D mouse like the 3D Connexion Space Navigator?

I remember some time ago I had similar issue in Max thanks to some "genius" drivers for it.

But yeah- get a trial of a new Max and I hope it works out :)
