Max 2016 and it's new behavior when opening files with missing textures...

Hi all,

After watching the "Take a Tour of the New 3ds Max" by Autodesk (at 29:47 minute) I found out that Max 2016 has a new feature where when opening a file with missing textures we get prompted with the familiar window but inside the window there is a new button.

Now, I tried replicating the situation- created a cube, applied a wood texture (the texture was saved in a specific location), saved the scene and closed Max 2016.

Then I deleted the wood texture from its location, re-opened the same scene and... not only was I not presented with the "missing textures" dialog window but also my cube had the wood texture applied to it.

I sampled the cube and found out that the texture had a new location now- it was on a different drive. So, I guess prior opening the file Max 2016 has searched my hard drives looking for a file with the same name as the deleted one and has re-mapped the location.

I admit- that is very handy but can also be a problem- what if the files only have the same names but are something completely different?

Does anybody have any idea if I can modify that behavior of Max?

Has anybody even stumbled upon that yet?

Thanks.

If you go to customize - customization - configure user paths - external files you can add folders that max will look through for external content. As long as a texture in one of those folders has the same name as the one you made dissappear, max should find the other one. So this does not sound like something new with 2016.

Thanks Nicolai,

I will check this out. I guess my Max 2015 and 2016 are setup differently then because reproducing the same in Max 2015 led to the "missing textures" dialog window.

Regarding the new in Max 2016- like I said it should be an additional button in the initial dialog window.

Cheers mate.
