V-Ray 3 is managing the sampling in a "Different way". in Theory the difference should not be in favor of VRay 2.x By default V Ray 3 should render faster.

One of the most common issues are, using MIS when you really don't need it, this is only if you have too many lights. if you have a few, turn it off. For some reason it is on by default.

Other problem can be that you already setup height samples in your textures and you are increasing your Min Shading Rate.

if it is a scene from 2.x leave everything as default. MSR=1

If you want to follow VRAy 3 workflow you need to reset all samples to default (8). Shaders and lights, and control them from MSR.

Incompatibilities problems between Max 2014 and 2015 are you Kidding?? this is Autodesk that we are talking about, everything is smooth and easy :p
