Devin Johnston
Does anyone have any idea when the first service pack will come out?
Scott Schroeder
My guess would be soon. By August last year, Max 2015 already had 2 service packs out.

Josef Wienerroither
Why? is almighty 3D Max 2016 falling on you already? The groups slowdown bug is indeed in dire need for a fix Another just recently found one hits maxscript developers using dotnet to write out strings to files/streams http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=98&t=1292818 ( thread includes a unofficial hotfix download ) i guess SP1 is already in testing phase... Bruce Hart
It's out now finally. They seem to have fixed the viewport lag with grouped objects
Scott Schroeder
http://area.autodesk.com/blogs/maxstation/n283-3ds-max-2016-service-pack-1-is-available They also fixed the empty file Revit re-link issue. Though no word on the hilariously stupid FBX linking scale issues.
Devin Johnston
That's good news, now I can finally uses the software I've had for half a year!
ottkadarik
Still, when Revit file has itself some links inside, the whole linking to max does not work. Thats completely useless set of software now, deinstalling all 2016 programs and going back to working version 2015. Scott Schroeder
You mean if I work in centimeters in Revit then link to 3Ds Max and it links as inch? It only affects direct FBX files and linking, not Revit linking. If you create a 10x10x10 box in Max and your system units are in feet. If you export that box out as an FBX and link that FBX back into the very same scene, the box comes in scaled to centimeters which is 3048% bigger than what it needs to be. If you click the "reset position" button on the object, it will scale it correctly to 100%. So unless you work in centimeters, the FBX link link will be scaled to centimeters regardless of your system units set. Revit imports fine as long as your Max units = Revit units. Justin Hunt
Revit linking is just FBX, the fbx export process is automated. Even though the geometry comes in to the correct scale, there is something screwy with geometry system scale. Never mind that curved surfaces still get tesselated to crap. Its still why I use DWG linking. I can live with invisible block headers but I cant deal with unusable curved surfaces

Devin Johnston
I'm installing the first SP and it's taking a really long time to "gather required information", I've been waiting like 30 minutes! Any ideas on how to speed this up?
Justin Hunt
mine took almost 2 hours to install and the extension pack a few seconds
Francisco Penaloza
it took like 45 minutes for me, and still the software is very slow. Click on a windows, wait, wait for it, then it pop, that's for everything. selecting vertex is just ridiculous.
Josef Wienerroither
Click on a windows, wait, wait for it, then it pop, that's for everything. selecting vertex is just ridiculous. There is definitely something wrong without installation or rig if that happens. Of course that's not the normal Max behavior Regarding long installation times: The silent install trick for service packs still works * open a command prompt ( as administrator) and change the current directory to the folder where the msp file sits * run the following command ( be sure that the *.msp file is named correctly ) msiexec /update 3dsMax2016_SP1.msp /quiet /l* sp1_inst.log* wait until the install finished ( about 5-10 minutes). You will not get any visual feedback, hence it's best to check the taskamanager for "msiexec.exe" processes which use CPU time. If they are gone after the above mentioned period, installation is finished * check the generated log file for success/failure messages ... Philip Nel
Hi guys - think I (or rather our in-house revit guru) found the solution to the FBX scaling issue. When Revit exports a FBX it's refering to your pc measurement setting and my OS was installed with default English(USA) and imperial settings..so when you export the FBX file (feet) and link it to Max (metric units), there is a scaling issue. So, as soon as I changed the pc measurement setting, the FBX link worked perfectly. To get to this setting: Go to Control Panel - Region & Language - and change Format: English (South Africa)...that's where I live..hehe And click on Additional settings at bottom of window: make sure the Measurement setting is Metric. Now open Revit and re-export the FBX file and link into Max (both display and system units set to mm) ..only a pleasure.. (I tried linking in a .Rvt file and even though the scaling is correct, it only brings in part of the model, with the dreaded red flag shown next to the link in Max. Fbx just more robust) I also installed SP1 for Max 2016
