Matt Sugden
I need to create this effect in max, of a laser beam scanning over an object odd shaped object. I thought initially just using a vray light (long and thin rectangular), but it's not bright enough relative to the rest of the scene, and also when I make the light source invisible it is not casting the light like a clear beam very effectively. Any other ideas?
Scott Schroeder
You could try using a standard direct light set to square distribution and set the shape of it to be very long and very thin. Or use a gobo in the texture slot for the light that is just a thin white line.
Stephen Thomas
+1 for gobo, use projection map slot with a standard direct light to avoid too much spread. Also quite easy to render a volume light pass using this method if you wanted to.
Francisco Penaloza
a V-Ray light plane should do it, just adjust the Directional value, to a minimum or something that you like. Adjusting environment exposure should compensate your light/Laser with respect your environment. You can use V Ray glow to create a "Laser" glowing effect or render a light pass and add the glow in after effects or photoshop. What is GOBO any ways??
