Arch Viz As A Career Change

Recommended Posts

Hi CGArchitect-ers

I was hoping you guys could answer a few questions I have regarding breaking into arch viz, building a successful career in the industry and what I should expect if and when I do break in.

My background is of a Senior 3D artist in the Games Industry. With a few successful projects under my belt, and personal choices I have decided to explore the possibility of a career change. I dipped my toe in Arch Viz, a few years back, and even had a few interviews with some London-based studios with little experience in the industry and portfolio. Unfortunately, those interviews didn't lead anywhere and I was forced to stay within the games industry to pay the mortgage. Now I'm back in a position where I can pursue the idea again and after a bit of research I have a few questions.

1: What are employers looking for in a portfolio? Software knowledge is a given, but are there any nuances that I should be aware of which might help out.

2: I'm aware that real time engines are being utilized more and more, would my knowledge of UE4 and Unity be a selling point on my CV, and can I tailor my portfolio towards this? Would this be something employers will be looking for or would an all round portfolio be best?

3: What are the hours like? I've worked in studios where I have been in crunch for months working solid 14 hour days. Is this also the norm in arch viz, or this really dependant on project length and studio organisation?

Thanks you for taking the time to read my ramblings. Any help and advice you can throw my way would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

James
