Dave Buckley
I just wondered if anyone was running Max/VRay on a UHD monitor? I'm aware that 3DS Max isn't ideal (looks tiny), but personally I think it's useable. My only issue is with the light cache in VRay, whenever I'm rendering at full 4k resolution, the light cache jumps between normal/green tinted/magenta tinted. The final render looks fine. If I switch back to 1920x1080 res then everything works as expected. Does anyone know what might be happening? It almost feels like the same effect when you have a loose cable. But all other programs are fine so it's not that. I'm pretty pleased with the UHD monitor other than this small niggly issue with the light cache as I usually use it to get an idea of the scene without waiting for a full render. Graphics card is K620 if it helps. Cheers
branskyj
I have a 4K monitor and so far no such issue with 3DS Max/V-Ray and the light cache...or at any stage in the rendering process for that matter. Does that only happen when it calculates the Light Cache? Not outside of Max/VRay? Like...in Windows UI? Get the latest graphics drivers, or maybe test it on a lower resolution to see if the problem persists...
Dave Buckley
Yeh it's literally just my light cache calculation, if I scroll in and out, it goes away. Weird. No problems elsewhere, apart from the fact I need magnifying glasses on my eyes
branskyj
Well, I have similar issues with the Light Cache. I don't get these colour shifts but the Light Cache preview disappears and to get it to show I need to zoom in and out. I posted the issue on Chaos Groups forum and the support said they were aware of the issue. I doesn't happen every time but it's annoying as hell since Light Cache is so useful for previews. Hope you get your issue solved.
Bruce Hart
Yep - I also get the green tint issue in the light cache. I have my fingers crossed that Autodesk will address the 4K Max UI soon with a service pack
Dave Buckley
Haha i recalibrated the screen 3 times thinking it was that. Adobe offer a UI scale to 200% I don't like it mind, I'd prefer 150%, but yeh Autodesk need to do the same, some aspects of ma are unusable on 4k as the dialogues aren't resizable, i.e try and change the wire/object colour something
branskyj
Yep, changing the wire/object colour doesn't show the OK button. Fortunately hitting Enter on the keyboard solves that.
maxgooday
Can anyone post a screenshot of their monitor and the scale of the icons of 3DS Max at 4K please. I've read the icons are very small and unreadable... Thinking of getting two new monitors.
Dave Buckley
The icons are the least of your worries. Half of the dialogue boxes don't work properly. I.e text cutoff, options missing etc. if I was you, I'd get a 4k for PS and a normal HD for max work, view ports on the 4k, toolbars etc on the HD. I'm kinda regretting my 4k purchase although it is bearable
RyderSK
13" laptops have 3.2k to 4k displays now and this issue doesn't seem to be moving much ahead :- ) We are actively investigating this high density display issue at Autodesk as a high priority. We are looking for volunteers and contributors for this research. Please email me directly if interested. :- )
maxgooday
Sounds like a 4K screen would be wasted using 3DS Max daily then. Shame as I really wanted to benefit from having ultra HD modelling and using PS etc
