Chris MacDonald
Hey guys, I'm having some issues with max crashing. I have two files; a site and a building. I can open each of these and work in them, and render them without any problems, however if I XRef one into the other (regardless of which way) it will crash, likewise with merging one into the other. I have tried creating a new file (for both the site and the building) and merging the old geometry in. I have collapsed railclone objects to poly's. Still crashing. Whatever it is is within the file, but I have no means of finding out what. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know of a way to debug/analyse/find out what has corrupted (if anything)? Any help would be much appreciated.
NoodleLuff
Is it just crashing on render or as soon as you xref/merge?
Chris MacDonald
Oddly I can reference/merge the files together and continue to work (haven't tried to render) but if I then save the file and re-open it, it crashes on open.
NoodleLuff
I've had extremely heavy files that take about 30 mins to open (thankfully not anymore). It's unfortunately a really hard problem to diagnose, as I am sure you know. How long have you waited when it crashes on opening? you could try this but it's a bit of punt... http://www.3dtotal.com/tutorial/3d_studio_max/quick_tip_1_free_up_memory_in_3dsmax/freeup_memory_01.php
Chris MacDonald
Thanks for the help, but it's not a memory issue. I'm closing in on the problem by merging in just a couple of parts at a time to a new file, saving it, opening it to see if it crashes and then adding more until the moment it crashes. This so far has narrowed it down to some wall geometry - though there's nothing unusual about the geometry, so I'm at a loss as to why it should be an issue. NoodleLuff
No problem. The most laborious way is normally the best way to solve these kind of issues! Best of luck
Chris MacDonald
Fixed, it was a piece of wall. Luckily I had a previous file version that I could re-import it from... The stupid part?.. There were no changes the the wall, it was exactly the same in both files yet one had corrupted, and the other hadn't. F*cking software! Sometimes it's enough to drive you mental. bobbylin
I noticed that the 3ds max software has been crashing a lot lately. I had my software crash because it has some missing library upon installation, though I don't know how it happened. It seems it has many issues and bugs that needs to patch on in their next update. I am glad though that finally you found the solution to your problem!
