doujay888
Hi Guys, Is there any way to export a max file to sketchup? I'll be doing the modelling in max exporting the model to sketchup for rendering, since im planning to have that sketchy effect. Anyone can help? Im using a sketchup free version. STRAT
export from max as either 3DS or DXF
quizzy
I would rather export to DWG instead of DXF...
bricklyne
Sketchup does not import 3ds file format at the moment. Your only options are DXF and DWG. Either way depending on the size of your model the file size is going to be about 10-15 times as big as the .3ds alternative. Typically you're better off just modelling straight up from Sketchup unless there's some form or geometry that can't be done in Sketchup. (Although, with a lot of the the ruby scripts API plugins/addons, practically anything one can do in MAX can be done just as easily in Sketchup. If you still decide to go the DWG or DXF way, then I would advise passing the file through AutoCAD firt and purging it to reduce it's size and eliminate unwanted geometry otherwise Sketchup may likely choke or unbreably slow down ( particularly when generating it's nice shadow effects and sketchy extensions) if you bring in a big file. Fernando Lino
I am not sure but I read that the latest version can import 3ds files and save as sketchup 3 format.
bricklyne
I have the latest version, and take my word for it, it does not import .3ds format files. The guys at @Last software who developed it have had quite a number of requests to include the .3ds import feature because of the ridiculously large file sizes of DXF and DWG file format for the same models in 3ds format and they said that version 5 will probably have it but as of now, the version 4.0170 build ( which is the latest version) engine does not support the interface to handle 3ds format. But they are working on it right now. But it can save as version 3 format, though. Like I said before, your best bet is to do the model in Sketchup ( which, in my opinion would be 10 times faster anyways) if it's Sketchup's natural hand-sketch render style that you are after. pirallah
I know this thread must be old...but just for the sake of updates: Sketchup version 5 can now import 3ds files. Ive tried it on a couple of simple objects, and as far as I can tell, its all working fine.
