Aksel
Hi, for an illustration job i am looking for prices of 3d models of four cities, that is New York, London, Paris and Berlin ('just' centers with landmarks). They should neither be heavily detailed nor blocky 2.5d models. I found one of New York which got exactly the right kind of details, but was very surprised it seems to be impossible to find the other cities as any 3d model at all! I am not talking about any textures, just plain lo/mid-res geometry. If anyone got more insight and has sources/URLs willing to share, i would be very happy to get to know! Thanks, Aksel. I know of a few versions of New York, but where did you find it--maybe you found a 'new' one? One company has many US cities http://www.u-data.com/index2.html but not international. I would expect the models, if they exist, to be expensive.
Aksel
hi ernest, yes, the link you posted is the model i was talking about, thats exactly what i was looking for. i would figure they are expensive, but my client asked me to find out what exactly expensive means - but without the other 3 cities it doesnt make sense anyway. thanks, aksel. Please post their response. I have inquired (3 different times) on behalf of clients to that firm and have three very different price quotes. The most recent was about $10,000 per sq/Km Nice, huh? Aksel
holy...! ernest, in fact i didnt't hear from them yet since mailing them a few days ago. i'll let you know if they come back on me. but i am sure with this kind of pricing that won't be the slightest option anyway. mmh. my client wants an illustrative clean look over a cityscape - anyone an idea how to accomplish this without 3d? and yes, it shouldnt clearly look like pshops 'find-contour'-filter... a. I also had a price of 1/4 that number per sq/Km, but that was pre-911 New York. There are more ways to process photos than just 'contours'. There is also manual tracing/shading for a 'clean' illustration. Do you have a visual sample of what you want the result to look like?
quizzy
wow... for that price you can build about 4x4 km yourself...
Aksel
yes, i thought about manual tracing as well. the look should be very abstract and graphically, no details like facades. the cleaner the better. problem is they need huge areas from birds eye and are on relatively tight budget (hey, as always), so i don't want to get into the trap of tracing birdseye-photos of 4 major cities manually, plus them having alterations. so now after models are no option i am looking into any semiautomatic way to still be able to give them what they want. a. upshot
I've done a bunch myself (not the ones your looking for)... The real trick is the height of the buildings. That information is not as easy to assemble as it would seem. Otherwise I'd just say get the public GIS, overlay an arial and start tracing! quizzy
you might be able to do this with Adobe's Streamline
Dave Jones
Hi, Maybe have a look at ZMapping a UK based firm who are advertising heavily to architects at the moment. They produce models of the sort you are looking for, they state they can produce models of small areas of land right up to whole countries! Again, probably they would quote way to high a price, but maybe see what they say.
Ernest Burden III
have a look at ZMapping a UK based firm who are advertising heavily to architects at the moment. Oh, something I forgot--these companies may have a service where they render out a view for you, which, if they do, would be a LOT less expensive than buying the rights to the model, which you do not need for your assignment. That could be your answer!
