Breaking up texture tiling

Anyone got any good tips on how to break up the texture tiling looking fake?

 

I'm kind of lost on how to do this.

 

It really depends on the texture you use. Can you show an example?

 

Make sure that the texture does not have any obvious unique spots in it. Ie a brown brick in a red brick wall. This might not seem like a big deal when you look at the texture, but when you start to tile it, you will quickly be able to see it "stick" out. The same can be said if the texture has some kind of pattern in it.

 

So try and hide these things that sticks out by editing the texture in photoshop.

 

To make the texture seamless you can do it quick and dirty in photoshop too:

- Open texture

- Click Filter

- Find "Other"

- Select "Offset"

 

You will now be able to clearly see where the texture's edges meet. You can fix this in many ways, but a quick one is the Stamp Tool (press "S" on the keyboard). Now hold "Alt" and select an area away from the edge and cover the edge with this new stamp (left click). Youtube or google "photoshop stamp tool tutorial" for more info.

 

If its something like grass you can also blend two textures on top of each other and combine those to one material in your 3D software.

Ha ha. You introduced a small tutorial on how to remove tiling from texture. And did it beautifully. :)
