Zdravko Barisic
Are you familiar with following video? Have you ever been in some of the further situation? http://www.nospec.com/faq
notamondayfan
Never do "spec" work, never will. I've done samples, where the prospective client wants to produce something I've never visualised before, so I've done a small scale demo to prove I can do it, as it's perhaps not something in my portfolio, but I've never done a job in the hope that I'll get selected, then paid. Also I also stipulate that I own that image / demo, and in no way can the client use it without consulting me first. As said in the web page, spec work only de-values your work, and it's not something that's done in any industry but design, so I've always said no, and always will. Nic H
It depends on the situation tbh. I wouldn't recommend doing spec work for property developers in visualization but its not a bad way to get in with someone who you have an existing relationship with or someone you really want to work with. As long as the parameters are set and you are happy whats stopping you. Done properly it can put you in front of the competition and get your work seen where otherwise you would have no chance. I made a second career that started from a lot of spec work and now I make cg videos for music and product stuff. It can work!
CliveG
I don't do spec work but the majority of the work I send to my clients is being submitted by them speculatively in competitive situations. Indeed we should be careful of what we wish for because I think that if those spec competitions didn't exist, I don't think the competitive tenderers would be quite so inclined to throw as much money and effort at winning a project. Including maybe not requiring our pretty pictures! Overall I don't agree with the concept and think it devalues design, but ..... think on the above there may be a flipside? Scott Schroeder
Though we shouldn't confuse spec work with proof of concept work. One is toxic and the other is what drives your business into new areas.
M V
As the man in the video said, "NO NO, get out of my place, I am BUSY"
