peterh1
Hi everyone, Usual long time viewer but first time poster. I have a client who's asked me to create an image with a similar design to this picture. Its not the same. They sent me this as a reference image. It's similar in complexity and feel. I won't have any CAD plans just hand drawn elevations and typical floor plan. What would be a fare time to create an image like this? Thanks in advance, I'm just concerned I'll under quote on time. James Vella
sit down and work out how long it will take, double it then give them that number.
himanshuchoudhary
I happen to have worked on the project which is shown as a reference. Mind you, all the 3d models came from the client(architect) and we didnt spend any time modelling it. The modelling was done in MAYA and Rhino. It all depends how efficient you are with complex geometries. Very difficult to decide on a timeline when you are only getting the hand drawn elevations. Plus, there is hardly any "typical" floor plan in this, other than the upper floors. I would suggest be very careful in giving then estimate. Devin Johnston
James is on the right track, working from hand sketches is full of problems because at this stage the design isn't set in stone. Once you start modeling the building and the design starts to take shape that's when you'll start to see lots of changes. I made the mistake of working on a project like this once for a set fee and I had to go back to the client after it was clear that the amount I originally asked for was far to small to cover all the work I was doing. I suggest you bill by the hour in cases like this where there is no way to calculate how many hours you'll put into a project.
peterh1
Thanks for the tips everyone. I think I'll go down the path of an hourly rate as apposed to a fixed price. It may result in losing the job but we don't want to get burned either. After discussing it more with my business partners we struggled to put a price on it since we won't have any definitive cads to work with. It still amazes me how Architects don't understand the time it takes to build a modify a building like that. Himanshu If you don't mind me asking, how much time did you spend on that image based of the fact they gave you the model? Its a very nice image! Thanks Peter
hanselmoniz
Body objects might help to model this kind of geometry as a base block... and you could work you way up from there... should take maybe 3-4 hours... maybe more but im just guessing..;-)
himanshuchoudhary
If you don't mind me asking, how much time did you spend on that image based of the fact they gave you the model? Hi Peter, it took me around 2.5 days for context development, and another 3-4 with revisions and updates. But this was the time span for 3 views
