GPU render experience using R9 29X series (utilizing open CL)

Recommended Posts

I'm in the middle of considering to invest on an additional video card to my arsenal for GPU render purposes as i might be needed it in the future. I know that many of you guys use NVIDIA's GTX 9XX series, but i want to know more about the alternatives provided by market which is comes from AMD, which is R9 29X series in particular. Or perhaps you could suggest me another 'capable' series from AMD. I found it not much solid info nor testimonies i can dig any where about it.

Tried several searches on youtube, webs and here but i can not find a solid hands on testimonial of the uses of the card for OPEN CL GPU based archviz rendering..

I hope there is some of the folks here that would happy to share their experience here.. The point i want to know in particular is: how much time faster? (the time multiplication rate) when using this card for GPU archviz render as if it compared to CPU archviz render for the same scene.. (E.g. 5X or 10x faster, etc)

Would love to hear from you all folks, thank you!

The vast majority of gpu renderers use cuda for rendering. So, Nvidia is a one-way raod in this case. I think there are 1-2 rendering machines that can take use of AMD's stream processors, but aren't so well-known as the cuda oriented renderers.

AMD cards could be used in some video rendering software, but most users rely on cpu for these tasks, so no real use for them here either.

Afaik there aren't many OpenCL renderers on the market at the moment but Octane is about to include it in their newest version, V-Ray already has it and I think FireRender is on its way as well...

Probably not the answer you were looking for but I hope it helps anway :)

Would be cool to see how it works in V-Ray though (or any other package) indeed, anyone care to share?
