kumarsrimali
Hey! I was just looking at some gaming laptops for working in 3ds max because workstation laptops with Quadros are pretty expensive. I'm looking at MSI GP62 6QE LEOPARD which contains everything like i7 6700hq, 8 GB RAM, 15.6" screen but GTX 950M is something that I'm not sure about. Can anybody here tell me if it's a good card for 3Ds Max, Vray and sometimes element 3D ? I know 970M will be better but that laptop () is costing me $770 more because it also has backlit KB and Windows 10. Also, how's the display quality of MSI ? Is it comparable with Dell ? joelmcwilliam
First things first: don't worry too much and just buy the best thing your budget allows you. (If the gpu and ram is enough. Well, it all depends on how complex and big your models are and how smooth of an experience you want. If you working on complex and big models i would suggest you to invest more money, get a better gpu (970m)and more ram (16gb). Gaming laptop are just fine for 3d work. If you don't have the money, don't worry and look at my first advise)
kumarsrimali
It's not about money, I can buy expensive laptop but I just don't know what's good value for money. I don't always work with heavy scenes but sometimes (once or twice in a year) when I work on heavy scenes, my current HD 5670 goes down to 1.4 fps and damn slow with after effects. I've read sometimes that 950m is the best value for money and 970m is next after that. Is this true ? BTW, I have almost decided to go with the expensive laptop (unfortunately not upgradable) but still have 24 hours to change my mind Edited December 14, 2015 by kumarsrimali
joelmcwilliam
I'm not sure how much ram you have in your current laptop, but when the ram usage reach it limits everything just slows down. (oops, just realized you are using a desktop. sorry) You say your hd 5670 isn't able to do the job. Well then it is obvious you need something more powerful and you need to be looking in the higher segment of laptops and yes, then you are better of with a 970m. kumarsrimali
I'm currently using a desktop with 16GB RAM which never maxed out. Do you think HD 5670 and GTX 950M are similar cards ? Yes, HD 5670 is slow sometimes but just for 1 or 2 projects.
joelmcwilliam
Yes, the 950m is somewhat better than the hd 5670. kumarsrimali
yes, I hope 950m is a good investment. The only reason why I was confused is that GPU in this laptop isn't upgradable and I will have to replace entire laptop if I need to.
joelmcwilliam
Yes, that's the thing with most laptops, you can't simply replace parts. Guess you will be going with the 950m then?
kumarsrimali
Yes, I think so because laptop with 970m is costing me $770 more and I think $770 just for a GPU is lil expensive. I still completely agree that 970m is the best value for money in the market.
