bad quality gallery images after upload

I just uploaded a piece to the gallery and then viewed it and the quality is terrible. Like facebook bad. I looked at a few other pieces I'd uploaded and it was the same. Looked at other people's images and they too had slightly blurry images.

 

What's happening is that the images are being stretched and possibly over-optimized? but definitely their size is being changed.

 

I found an older piece from a few years ago where this didn't happen.

 

I strongly advise looking at your gallery code to correct this because every single 3d artist out there goes to great lengths to get the exact image quality/sharpness from their piece and it makes a huge difference.
