Are there any articles/tutorials on making decent displacement images?

Here's just one example of the kind of displacement (scroll to 'depth'):

I think Arroway do some nice ones in their gravel pack, but pretty bad displacements in their stones/walls.

 

Just wondered if there were some known techniques for avoiding things getting lumpy/spiky? Might even be a baking thing.

those RDT are pretty good but do go 'spikey' if you push them past the suggested range

 

they use 16bit displacement maps which combined with high settings in a 2D or 3D vray displacement mod work well and render very fast

(that said i havent got them looking as good as the examples yet)
