danweisbard
Hi All My background is in CG animation and I have been a Maya/Vray user for the past 12 years. Can anyone explain the benefits if any of switching to 3dsmax for architectural viz work. I have done plenty of product and automotive viz in Maya and just wondering if I should consider learning Max as well for my potential freelance arch work. Thanks for your responses. philippelamoureux
3ds max may be the standard for studios but if you freelance i'm sure you are more than fine with maya. If your renderer of choice is available on maya then it's good! The only thing I would see causing a potential problem is if the good scripts/plugin are not available for maya. If it wasn't for the UI I would switch to blender myself probably. I've seen some cool stuff done with cycles and it's completely free.
adanchasse
I thought about it as well, but I've found it really doesn't matter. A client doesn't care what you use for the most part. I use Cinema4d
joadhughes
If all you are asked to do is deliver renders, it doesn't matter, but most studios use 3DS. If they just want a render at the end of it, you could use Blender, C4D or whatever else.
Rich O
Main advantages of Max are better interoperability with various cad formats, and a huuuuge library of V-ray ready assets. Not a lot out there for Maya+V-ray. I also prefer Max's curves tools to Maya's for drawing stuff. It also has a very good tool for arraying objects, which always irked me about Maya (as a non-scripter type) V-ray is better integrated in Maya though.
