AJBC
Hey guys, Like most people here, I am often ask what I do for a living, and I always struggle to explain it succinctly in a way that the person fully understands. Usually I can tell that they don't completely get the idea, and often just brush it off as "oh so it's technical". It's not too bad explaining to someone who knows what "3D" is, or knows what I mean when I say I do "renders", but the average person I speak to has no idea. I was curious, how do you guys explain it when asked? What's your one or two sentence log-line of arch viz. Currently I deploy "I create images of buildings that have not yet been built so that people can see what they look like". Seems to work okay, but most people still don't fully get it. And I don't really like to pull out my phone and show them a render unless they ask, I shouldn't have to do that I feel. Cheers
CliveG
Though it's a bit pretentious, most lay-people in my experience (or age group) recognise or understand "architectural artists impressions". But I always prefer to tell people I'm a "Garbo" ( Australian for garbage collector) especially for those who like to pigeonhole you by profession! heni30
I dumb it down to the lowest common denominator and tell people I do pretty pictures on the computer of what a buildings going to look like when it's finished. Then I elaborate and say they're used for marketing, to get money from the bank and to show the zoning board and community what an amazing asset it's going to be for the environment. They seem to get the "picture". Edited February 28, 2016 by heni30
CliveG
.... to show the zoning board and community what an amazing asset it's going to be for the environment. Yeah, but isn't it hard to talk and socialise - with your tongue so firmly in cheek?
Richard Birket
A very good question, and something I have been trying to answer for nearly 20 years. Person: "So, Richard, what do you do for a living then?" Me: "It's called Architectural Visualisation" Person: "Oh, ok" (smiles and walks away or changes the subject)
Corey Beaulieu
I always say that I work in Architectural Marketing creating visual collateral/materials for Architect's and Developer's projects. My job title is Senior Production Artist. If that doesn't do it, then I simply say CGI artist for buildings that haven't been built yet. And last ditch effort might be to simply show the website of the company I work for, but that's really just if it gets desperate.
