Automate geometry creation

Hello people,

I have an idea here but i'm clueless about how to make it happen.

I'm not sure the topic name is accurate, but, i have an aluminium framed door that i use in multiple projects i make, it's simple, like one profile that surrounds a glass foil (its for furniture and i'm pretty sure anyone that works with archviz knows it) with a handle which size may vary and sometimes, depending on a few variables it may have or not an horizontal crossing profile or two.

So, i have the model and i have even the material IDs set for it, and now i want to be able to create it, like i do with windows in the geometry creation section of 3D max.

I know it can be done, i'm just not sure HOW to do it.

Can someone help?

I would bet you could create something using the MCG that generated your object exposing all of the parameters that you hold as variable.

Hi Corey,

Pardon me for my lack of knowledge, but i'm not familiar with technical terms.

I used the standard 3D Max tools like line, extrude and proboolean to form the frames and box with chamfer to define the glass panel.

About MCG, i still have to learn more about it, since i can barely understand the concept.

I don't want someone to take my hand and guide me thru the process, but i really need a bit more explanation.

As i said, i'm new to the tool creation "area" of 3D Max.

Thanks again if anyone can help me up!

You know, it is actually funny that in all the years of 3D Max and Max Viz and Max Design, nobody create a decent Door, windows, stairs, roof or anything Arch Viz.

Well there is some cool roof generators now, but Doors and windows, really??

Corey is right, using MCG can be the perfect solution, but to be honest you really need to know that sh**#$t to make it work, is not "Artist friendly" how the promoted.

Having said all that complain :p Scriptspot have a large collection of similar scripts and plugins, some are old others older, some of them may help you.

Hi Francisco,

Well, i guess two points make it a statement, so now i've gotta start sniffing around for tutorials on MCG, and since as i quick searched and found none to few possibilities, the trial and error process must be taken!

Thanks a lot and if anyone else have another point of view, will be very welcome to share.

years ago I made a simple script, by the way I know nothing about scripting, using the macro recorder.

The script made a window frame with glass and mullions. The frame and glass had different ID's. The poly had to be manually cut where the mullions would go.

It was simple and rather crude, but perfect for my needs.

As I said, I don't know anything about scripting but basically you activate the macro recorder, model your window in a basic and clear step by step process. The macro recorder with record each instruction as a script. you can then save and modify the script. Probably best to read the manuals for the exact process.

Here is the script I made, It makes a very low poly window, or at least one side of a window by inserting and extruding faces I made it mainly for when you only need to see one side of the model at a distance :)

Basically create a plane,

collapse it to an editable poly

add in edges where you want the mullions

select ALL the faces (sub-object poly )

Run the script

The frame will have ID 1 and the glass ID 2

feel free to modify and improve as desired
