Chris MacDonald
Hey guys, I've been using 2016 for quite a while now and it's been fine, but when I installed (a couple of weeks ago) the SP3 update, everything reverted back to as if it had just been installed - large toolbar icons, custom quads gone, that tips window on startup, etc. So I spent a while resetting everything how I like it, and today it has gone and done it again! Has anyone else experienced this?
Scott Schroeder
Do you use a custom saved UI? I've had my max forget to save things and revert back to default every so often. Usually after a very hard straight-to-desktop crash. I've also found that you have to save your UI to a very specific place or Max will lose it constantly and revert back to defaults. That spot is typically C:\Users\VelvetElvis\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsMax\2016 - 64bit\ENU\en-US\UI\Workspaces I know. Nice and easy to find, ey Autodesk comrades? Jose Negrete
I'm still on 2015 but that has happened to me on occasion. I keep a backup saved UI file.
James Vella
I keep getting this too. Any fixes? I have my ui saved but it still reverts anyway... ? edit; for now copying the ENU folder and pasting it back when it reverts fixes my settings... but I have to do it 3 times a day Edited April 14, 2016 by redvella
Josef Wienerroither
Are you all the only 3ds Max user on that machine ? If yes, you can force 3ds Max to not use that obscure user folder for it's settings, but the 3sd Max root folder ( as it was in earlier days ) Just edit "InstallSettings.ini" in your 3ds Max root and change "useUserProfiles=1" to "useUserProfiles=0" After that, 3ds Max should create and change your settings right in the max root subfolders ( en-US\UI etc... , depending on the language settings you use ) I think loosing the user settings ( when you use the default options ) happens because of some write permission issues. I personally never experienced this, and i use "useUserProfiles=0" since they intruduced the new user dependent settings location.... James Vella
this broke my 3ds max... im getting pop ups everywhere now exclaiming 'invalid flyout button id!'
James Vella
wow... nothing works, reverted the settings, reverted my ENU folder... its completely borked... have to uninstall sp3,2,1 max & all plugins and reset... never doing that again
Josef Wienerroither
You mean useUserProfiles=0 did that ? Unlikely, or more impossible - all this setting does is creating the user configurations inside the max root folder - it does'nt even touch anything in your users path than A simply change to useUserProfiles=1 would have swtiched back to your old configuration in your users folder ( asuming you did'nt delete them by hand ) And of course you should NEVER delete any ENU folder in your max root folder - just in case you did that ( at least it sounds like that ) Edited May 5, 2016 by spacefrog
James Vella
lol yes, i didnt think so either, i also changed it back to useUseProfiles=1 and it remained. I moved the ENU folder from C:\Users\render\AppData\Local to desktop to reset the ui to default, then when it errored I put it back. I read elsewhere it is related to massfx, which seems possible as when I loaded the toolbar it the buttons were not visible. Im going to go out on a leap here and say it could be related to permissions somewhere (running win10), and changing the file inside C:\Program Files\Autodesk that changed a permission somewhere. I tried an autodesk repair, i tried uninstalling just sp3, then running, then reinstall sp3, still has issues. Ill try a full uninstall and install see what happens.. o.O Edited May 5, 2016 by redvella
Josef Wienerroither
that massfx - invalid flyout id reply was written by me too i strongly asume ;-) It turned out that you can get rid of the invalid flyoutID message by deleting the MassFX toolbar from the UI configuration dialog and restart 3ds Max. The toolbar will be recreated by the MassFX macroscripts and the flyout error is gone But i don't know if you really want to follow any advice from me again - when the first one proved to be so desastrous ;-)
James Vella
lol, next time. Its all clean now. Im sure it wasnt to do with your advice, Im still working out the kinks with windows 10 - or autodesk + w10. Its all good, no deadlines missed
ryansbucks
This worked perfectly for the invalid flyout error! Thank you!
