stitch selected - can't see shared edges in order to stitch

This is something I keep coming up against time and again. I unwrap an object and sometimes, not sure what the cause is, it will refuse to show shared edges - period. No matter how many times I try, reset the uvs, start over etc.

 

I expect to click on one edge and see the edge it connects to in blue or something.

 

edit: in the model I'm working on now, I am seeing one shared edge highlighted in blue, but all other shared edges aren't showing up. I detached a few faces into their own elements if that makes a diff? but even before that I wasn't seeing shared edges.
