raphaelroncatti
Hi everybody, I'm having some trouble with my mesh, spent two days trying to fix it already, but nothing seems to fix it. As you can see in the img, the normals are all weird, it happens only after chamfering the geometry (the poly seems fine with no normal issues). I've tried to reset normals, to break it (which fixed it until I apply the auto smooth again). Also, I tried to apply an edit poly over the chamfer modifier and then smooth, but nothing happens. If I only set it to smooth the chamfer only, it works, but then the reflections won't look right. Also, it kinda gets fixed if I apply 4 segments to the chamfer and a turbosmooth with 3 interations over, but then I'll end up with some pretty heavy geometry (for something so simple), and since the scene will be gigantic, I really need to keep it simple. Any suggestions? Any help is welcome Thanks in advance
Francisco Penaloza
I would recommend to be sure all vertex are welded. it seems like there is a problem with triangulation. If you put a mesh modifier in top of your geometry, you'll see how Max is triangulating your geometry better. Since they are all flat surfaces, I would go to face sub level, clean all the smooth group and then Auto smooth again, that should clean everything up with no need of adding smooth modifier that will create strange deformations. If you want to use smooth modifier any ways, you need to create tension edges in all corners, all of them.
raphaelroncatti
Hi Francisco, thanks for the help. I've been checking it for unwelded vertex, inverted edges, mesh corruption for the last 2 days, I pretty much remodeled everything like 3 times already, same thing happens. Also tried to export in different formats and bring it to a fresh file, with no success. I guess I've expressed myself wrong, I'm not applying a smooth modifier, but using the auto smooth on the smoothing groups itself (after clean all), the modifier I need to apply is chamfer(quad), which is when the normal issue shows up. As soon as I set the tension to be 0,5 it gets all the normals issues. I've tried turbosmooth after chamfering it myself, which looks much better. Or using the chamfer modifier with up to 4 segments (also looks good, still a triangulation issue here and there), but nothing that I can't fix with an edit poly over... but then I'll have problems with the size of the scene, since the project is a whole housing master plan and I'll go from 30k tris each "group of units" to 360k tris each. I'm going kinda crazy with these one, it's an insanely simple mesh to give this much trouble.
Francisco Penaloza
Well first, if you are doing a master planning rendering, I don't think the bevels in the windows will ever be visible. Even if you want something you could use the material bevel option, V Ray and Mental Ray have the same option. Did you tried the smooth options in the Chamfer modifier it self? you can disable it or only smooth the chamfer it self.
