demo38
We are currently using Lightwave and looking to switch to a new software, potentially. We do architectural rendering primarily and I am wondering the benefits, to either MAX or VIZ for Realism in 3D spaces, both interior / exterior. Can things like Brazil, V-ray, and Insight be used as render engines in Viz? Does Viz support Object animation? Also, are other Max plug-ins usable in Viz, etc??? We're just trying to justify spending the extra cash to go to Max, and saw that Viz had some similar features... Thanks.
bigcahunak
VIZ will do most of the stuff you'd want to do for architecture, and then some more... All plugins you mentioned are VIZ compatible plus many others (most of max ones). Actually there are some tools that are very beneficial for architecture, which you won't find in MAX (only as an addon from discreet). There are some past threads asking the same question (run a search). The main issue at the moment should be the future of those tho apps. MAX will surely be continued while VIZ's future isn't that certain at the mo. However I'm sure that one would be able to upgrade to MAX in the future if that would be the case, and perhaps thats another point in favour of VIZ... Good luck. proces2
Those plug-in renderers can be used in VIZ. Object animation can be done in VIZ. But, no sub-object animation. When doing architectural animation, though, the sub-object animation isn't necessary. With VIZ, you can animate the position, rotation, scale of ANY object (geometry, light, camera, etc.). nuno
hi demo38, adt 2004 ships with integrated viz render, maybe you must consider this as a choice. "Bring Your Designs to Life To communicate design intent effectively, designers require tools to visualize and present design intent at every stage of the design process in a way that is fluid and efficient. Autodesk Architectural Desktop’s new visualization capabilities make this possible with VIZ Render, a visualization solution that is effectively integrated into the Autodesk Architectural Desktop environment, enhancing design workflow." FROM AUTODESK best to you, nuno

demo38
Great Feedback everyone, Thanks. I found a lot here, and looking through past threads, I still am researching, but will try and post a compilation of everything I've found in one spot here. Thanks again, -d
Brian Cassil
Indeed Viz does do most everything that architects need, however, therin lies the problem. If you do much animating the best you can hope for is for your animations to look like most other architectural animations. We upgraded from Viz to Max about a year and a half ago when it became clear that almost every other firm was outputting some form of camera "fly bys". We wanted our stuff to stand out from that and so we got max. Now I can and have implemented things like flags waving, animating light intensities, dynamic water (with a plugin), trees gently blowing, and many many other effects into animations that make them stand out from a sea of camera fly bys. If you are going to do much animating I gaurantee you will get bored with viz very quickly.
3dp
yep i'm with brian on that one if you are feeling creative and want to go the extra mile then plump for max i have been doing more animation work in the past year and with viz you reach a creative ceiling pretty quickly having said that there are some real stabilty issues with max5 so much so that i try only to work with max4.2 where possible
demo38
OK, I'm sold, Max 5 it is! However, you have me hesitant again about the stability issues? Anything in particular? Known causes? Anyone else on this?
