Quardo K2200 or GTX 960

Hi newbie here!

I'm planning to get a new workstation, not so high end as per below for my work.

Mainly 3dmax +vray adv., Autocad & photoshop for interior perspective. No gaming

 

6th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-6700 (Quad Core 3.40GHz, 4.0Ghz Turbo, 8MB, w/ HD Graphics

16GB or 32GB

 

But which graphic card will be better since i'm using vray adv for rendering?

I short listed: Quardo K2200 or GTX 960?

For the same money you should get the new GTX 1070 or even the 1060 will give you better performance/price than that old Quadro K2200 or the GTX 960.

Quadros have almost zero performance advantage on 3DS Max viewport...the particular K2200 is as powerful as a GTX 750 / 750Ti so it will end up being slower than not only the much cheaper GTX 960, but the models mentioned by Francisco above.

 

Vray Adv. doesn't care about your GPU, unless of course you are using Vray RT GPU, where again is faster on consumer GTX hardware - simply because it doesn't really care about drivers, but raw h/w performance.

 

When to pick a Quadro:

1) OpenGL. The app needs to be OpenGL. Forget it for 3DS, Revit, Acad etc...doesn't matter cause all those are D3D.

2) Optimized drivers for OpenGL have to exist and be updated regularly. Cause if nVidia doesn't do the work, applications devs re-develop their engines to do better with GTX/Radeon consumer cards. e.g. the case with Maya.

 

For the last few years, Quadros & FirePros became tools for design people outside the ArchViz field: Solidworks, Catia, SNX etc design tools love them.

 

For the rest of the people is mostly un-needed and often forced down your throat by computer builders that make more $ by selling you more expensive parts and have zero incentive to check their facts on whether there are real performance benefits or not. i.e. you cannot even buy a Dell, HP or Lenovo tower that is labeled "workstation" without a "workstation card". You can get a BOXX with a GTX, but they markup other components making their profit there, but outside of their support & nice cases, there is nothing "magic" about BOXX or any other workstation builder: DIY / BYO machines can be just as reliable & fast - if not faster - for less $.
