Hello,

I have graduated with interior design degree with excellent performance. However, I am not content with the creativity level in my designs. I feel that if I am going to design then I should create something thats unique enough and remarkable. But, when I have a design task I cant visualize new design. Even if I tried to have inspiration from another images, I have difficulty collecting different ideas from them and reassembling them into a new whole. All I can do is to create a variation from one interior design image where it looks different but related.

I think that I cant continue working like this. What can I do about this situation?

If you recently graduated and have determined that you simply can't continue working in the only manner you seem to be able to conceive, then you should change your career.

That said, there are thousands of successful designers in the world who base their entire body of work around derivative methods.

Looking to alternative sources of inspiration could help, for instance reading or listening to interviews/dissertations on design can be better for getting the imagination going than simply viewing images of designs. Or even exploring design that is unrelated to the work you would be doing. These things force your mind to make the connections and draw the lines, where an image of an interior design simply hands that directly to you leaving little or no space for your mind to work.

I like this blog for design inspiration:

This is a very good podcast that get's the imagination going:

NPR is another good source if you can pick between the political stuff. TED talks can also be a good source of this type of inspiration.

It may just take time to develop your own style and method of working. I think most, if not all interior designers get their "ideas" from the clients wants, internet and trade resources, magazines and other work. There are only so may suppliers of finishes and materials, unless you are going all out custom, it's just a matter of collecting these ideas and putting them together.

I think you are too young in your career path to get that resolution. If you chooses interior design is because you felt something about it, that made you feel comfortable about it. Unless you studied that because there was family pressure or something.

If you finish the career with rather great output, all what you need now is experience.

As mentioned by others here, when you start to work with real life project you'll learn different method to take in a project. They all usually start from research form similar projects.

Many times you even won't be able to "design' but just make whatever the clients want. sad but true.

All this experience will give you a wider view of what interior design field it is about and then you can decide if you stay or move around. It won't be wasted time, all the experience, all the people you will meet and learn from them will help you to profile your personality and professional path.

Unless you feel that you want to go for fine arts, which it may be related in some way, but it won't pay you anything, so you could be a interior designer by day and painter by night :p or mime or whatever is your call :p

I started as an Industrial designer. now I am Sr Viz in an Arch firm and technology leader who knew :p

I do know that there are many designers who work like that. But, I want to be like the professiomal ones. I may think like this since when I usually see their work in the web, they seem new and unrelated to others' designs.

If you know some of the designers who work with the same method I am using & their work is a high quality. I would like to know some of them please.

In college usually asked us to start with a theoritical concept just like architecture school. I used to come up with whatever concept I can think up, but, afterwards when it comes to materializing the concept I cant visualize something from my head. Instead, I do look up many interior designs and see which style express very well my idea. Then, I make something different but can be related to these designs visually.

Usuaslly when I look to design images, I can read different ideas and concepts from them. But, I cant do the opposite. I cant visualize different designs for one concept depending on my thought only without looking to other designs.

Mark Galbraith,

Francisco Penaloza,

I had summer training with an office. The designs were really based on other classic designs chosen by the client. But, for example there offices in UAE that always design classic things and nothing is like the other even so they are all classic. Iam sure that clients there have designs theirinds are set on. But, I think that those designers create something that unique for them after understanding the client mindset.

This when the design is all about the 3d.

When it comes to designing based on the materials and furniture in the market with no 3d before, I can really sense different challange. I dont know yet how I am going to start mastering this professionally.

First of all the "design" portion is a small percentage of the field of Architecture and Interior Architecture and design. Everyone wants to be the designer but few get to have that seat and usually after paying their dues doing grunt work, unless you're self employed or at a small studio. You may find you're more suited for project management or another facet of the business. Go get a job at an office and find out.

What are other facets of the business are there beside design, project management and contracting?

Are there really no way to enhance my design ability?

If I changed the question to what way can I develop my artistic imagination or any other question in the line would there be a way?

I did very well in school regardless the trouble I have. But, I want to move to new level. I dont want to be blocked in the same mindset forever.

Lighting designer, electrical engineer, structural engineer, specifications writer, marketing, model makers, 3D renderer, visual presentation people which might fall under marketing. Big offices tend to have more specialized positions and small offices people wear many hats.

Study other fields in the Arts, sculpture, painting, photography, film making. Go to museums, read about ground breaking artists and where they got their inspiration. Nobody can teach you to be inspired you have to find your passion and inspiration. As an example I worked with a designer that was inspired by using the spaces between buildings.

I am sorry buddy, let me be straight forward with you. Like we say in my country, "the true blind is the one who does't want to see"

if you read each comment in this thread, you'll find A LOT of good advice, from people who has been in this business for a long time.

. Nobody can teach you to be inspired you have to find your passion and inspiration.

Robert Nailed in the head, it is up to you right now to make the difference. you learned 'something' at the university, now you need practice, real world experience.

I know what people design in UAE I worked on projects there and let me tell you, they do great things, but it is very repetitive. How you learn other, things?? well you have internet, the whole world at your finger tips, Lot of writing of all the designers in this planet.

How you become a good interior designer? well hard work buddy, it won't happens because one book or one tip, it will happens after several years of hard work, doing mistakes, taking risks, following you ideas, listening to others, following rules, breaking rules and everything else.

stop questioning, go out and do your thing!
