New workstation for 3D

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I´m planning to build a workstation for 3d work. The softwares i use frequently are 3ds max with V-ray, Corona (so mainly CPU rendering) and Photoshop. This PC it should be my main workstatation - from modeling to rendering tasks, so for one-thread tasks will Intel Core i7-6850K 3,6GHz work perfectly, I´d like to slight overclock it. My specs of workstation:

CPU: Intel Core i7-6850K (or i7-6800K) --- 660,- (450,-)

Cooler: Noctua NH-D15 --- 90,-

MB: Asus X99-A / USB 3.1 --- 275,-

GPU: Asus Turbo GTX 1060 6GB --- 295,-

Storage: SSD Samsung 950 Pro 256GB --- 180,-

HDD WD Red Pro 3TB --- 180,-

RAM: Corsair 32GB DDR4 2666MHz CL 16 Vengeance LPX --- 160,-

Case: Fractal Design Define R5 --- 120,-

PSU: Seasonic X Series 850W --- 190,-

Total --- 2150,-

My budget is around 2300,- €

I hope to get some good advice from you guys, so what do you think about this configuration - is it sensibly balanced? Or can I take for example better cpu (i7-6900K) instead of GTX 1060?

Thank you in advance!

You don't need the 6850K. It's the same with the 6800K, it just has 12 more pcie lanes, which won't be of any importance in your case.

If you intend to overclock, don't expect to get far with an air-cooler. I would prefer a good AIO instead. This would give you more headroom for oc and safer temps during rendering. There are some good AIO in the market right now:

For the motherboard, you'd better pick a newer model, like the Asus X99-A II for full broadwell-E compatibility. The previous models can work fine, but they need a BIOS upgrade and you need a compatible cpu to do that (5820K etc). If some friend of yours has a haswell-E cpu or the computer shop you're buying stuff from offers to complete this task for you, then you'd be fine with an older X99 motherboard.

For 180€ I would certainly buy a larger ssd instead of the 950 Pro. Besides, you're on a tight budget and this pcie ssd is a "luxury" right now.

You don't need a 850W psu for this build. A 650/750W golden/platinum would be more than enough. Some examples:

Don't go below a 1060 for this budget. I managed to configure a 6900K system for around 2300€ but from German shops:

1 HGST Deskstar 7K4000 4TB, SATA 6Gb/s (HDS724040ALE640/H3IK40003272SW/0F14681)

1 Crucial MX200 500GB, SATA (CT500MX200SSD1)

1 Intel Core i7-6900K, 8x 3.20GHz, boxed ohne Kühler (BX80671I76900K)

1 Corsair Vengeance LPX schwarz DIMM Kit 32GB, DDR4-2400, CL14-16-16-31 (CMK32GX4M4A2400C14)

1 Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1060 6GB WindForce OC 6G, 6GB GDDR5, 2x DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort (GV-N1060WF2OC-6GD)

1 ASUS X99-A II (90MB0Q80-M0EAY0)

1 Phanteks Enthoo Pro M schwarz mit Sichtfenster vollflächig (PH-ES515PA_BK)

1 Cryorig A80 (CR-A8A)

1 Corsair RMx Series RM650x 650W ATX 2.4 (CP-9020091-EU)

It's 2307,77€ without shipping costs. See if you can make it happen :).
