Greg Davis
I'd like to know what I need to set up Vray distributed rendering. I currently have a single pc running windows 10 pro. I would like to build one render node now and plan on adding nodes in the future as budget allows. Currently, I have no network to speak of - just using wifi that my office building provides. I'm wondering if I can just use cables and a switch or something to get the PCs to communicate without having to set up a real network with a server, etc. I would like to keep it as cheap and simple as possible while still being reliable. I will be using Vray 3.4 for Max and Vray 2 for SKU, all pc's OS will be Windows 10 pro. Current workstation: 5820k, GTX 770, 32GB, 550 EVO SSD's Render Node config still to be decided.... So, to sum up my question - What is the cheapest easiest way to set up Vray distributed rendering between 2-3 PCs? Cheers! Edit: I currently use Dropbox as a 'server' to sync files between home and office pc. I have both drives mapped exactly the same so I can open files on either computer and all xrefs/assets load properly. Will probly do the same with render node.......unless anyone has a better suggestion. (it may be time to start thinking about a real server...?) Dimitris Tolios
You don't really need a shared file server for assets to be shared between client (workstation) and render nodes (servers) in a DR job. Just make sure the "Transfer missing assets" is enabled in the Vray Distributed Rendering Settings dialog. For networking the Workstation & Nodes you don't need expensive equipment. Most likely a WiFi home network would suffice for most jobs. For added reliability, a good Gbit switch is more than enough and ofc a better choice than WiFi. A simple Netgear GS305 or any other Gbit switch would do. Hook up the machines on it, and have them join the same network. You don't even have to have a shared folder for the assets etc...just follow this instructions: https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/VRAY3MAX/Set+Up+Distributed+Rendering If you don't mind spending some more money you could go for a more advanced unit like the managed Netgear ProSAFE GS108E that supports Link Aggregation, prioritizing ports etc, that you might find useful if you add more nodes, or a NAS etc. 8-port might seem a bit overkill for two machines, but the 5-port version is like $4 cheaper, so... For a basic render node on a budget, you could look at something like that: "The “less than $600 ” Render Node – Q3 2016" Edited October 13, 2016 by dtolios
