How do I restore my General Viewport Labels?

there is only one maxscript command for this for all viewports:

ViewportButtonMgr.EnableButtons

the above would tell you wether they are enabled or not

The following would turn them on

ViewportButtonMgr.EnableButtons=true

As far i remember, the pre-Nitrous ( direct3d) viewports of older Max versions suffered from such glitches sometime, when you had some very demanding textures displayed in the viewport, or geometry with broken or messy UV coordinates. If this is on an empty scene, i can't imagine why that should happen.

If it's with a certain scene ( or object in the viewport) check all UV channels and materials on that object. There is a chance that the materials are the cause or this...

EDIT: what i've written above would only cause COMPLETE disappearance of the label. only missing the viewport type label is certainly very very strange. I would try to close Max and rename the 3dsmax.ini file ( which sits in the Max root folder with 3ds Max 2011) and check viewport labels again
