3ds max 2017: max crashes when selection python listener

Hello,

 

Whenever I open max 2017 is works as designed until i opened up the max listener and select python. The double arrows ( >> ) show up and then max just shuts off. No error message of any kind, no way to submit an error report. Has anybody had this experience, or can anybody suggest a way to fix this?

 

I am running windows 10, normal launch by just double clicking the icon that the installer created.
