Autodesk rising maitenance plans pricing

Recommended Posts

I think there will be a lot of people who stay on maintenance, maybe pay a head of time for a few years, but not switching. It is a bad move to 'force' loyal customers to do something that they don't want to. There are other valid options for 3D Packages out there, and today with the mentality of mobile apps, people do not feel too much attachment to these type of software any more. Their renting method do not scale well for large companies either. They are really killing the Golden Goose.

What surprise me is that real-time engine, such Unreal and others are moving in a complete opposite direction, free software!! and we all know that real-time rendering is the next thing, ray-traced rendering will fall in to a small niche.

With render engines like Vray and Corona being developed for other 3D software, at that point you are just pushing polygons through an engine. Especially for ArchViz where most of us only use a very limited amount of the tools Max or Maya have, software like Modo and even Blender look even more appealing with AutoDesk's new plan. Not to mention, as Jeff was pointing to, other software companies are a lot more nimble and are developing a lot faster than the AutoDesk products. Escaping the AutoCAD and Revit formats will be a challenge though.

I'm sure this plan was contrived to make their shareholders happy, but if they see the install base dropping, this plan may go away pretty quickly.

This I believe is the crux of it from my point of view. I work in house at an architectural firm and whilst the licencing costs of autodesk are fairly astronomical it'll really take a seismic shift in the construction industry to do away with the likes of Revit and AutoCAD. I just can't see it happening.

Perhaps the film & TV industry will be able to adapt & shift a lot quicker as they have fewer ties to concern themselves with.

They are removing the option to pay for more than one year at a time.

I don't spend as much time pushing polys as i used to but it seems that increasing a tool's price by 38% is not the way to go when the work produced with the tool is being devalued more and more every year.

Just for comparison, I know these are not as used or know software, but:

SketchUp Pro 2017 is $695,

is $660, which looks amazing

Blender is Free, Vray for Blender is $350, Corona for Blender is Free

MODO is $1800, Vray for MODO is $700

Granted, each of those have their limitations, but, they are an option, especially for smaller studios or freelancers.

This is indeed dire news. And the flames are rising everywhere. If the userbase of ALL ADSK's line of products rise up I guess we can at the very least make them look BAD in the eyes of everyone - users, shareholders, managers, whatever.

Please, read this petition (there are links on it to other great sources of information), sign if you agree, and SHARE to all you most immediate circles on social media, on your classroom, on your studio, on your work environment, doesn't matter.

You got a good point, I used to be a cranky Sketchup user, I always thought it was a very dum 3D Software, but alas it proved me wrong, also community really help this software to grow exponentially.

I do freelance from home too and every year after new software comes I question my self if should I stay using 3D Max or move on, as today since I don't do much animations I think using Sketchup would be way better value than keep paying of a every year more expensive 3D Max.

With VRay and corona working on Sketchup really for a small/ medium Arch Viz project I don't see why not to use really.

Here is what really upset me about this whole debacle: I was told I had to bring current all my suites and on maintenance plans in order to be able to keep my perpetual licenses. They got a small fortune from me because I don't believe in renting software and then a few months later they come out and wine about maintaining two licensing scenarios is too hard and that they are basically going to raise maintenance each year to force me to switch to subscription. I just love it when I am told to bend over and grab my ankles repeatedly............

Thank you AutoDesk Board of Investors!

The thing about perpetual licenses...they are perpetual. Stay on Windows 10 and Max 2017 or previous indefinitely if you love Max but hate what is happening with maintenance.

If I was paying for my licenses instead of my employer, I would have moved from Max long ago, but I am in Revit and AutoCAD on a daily basis also. I do use SketchUp a lot more lately, and I have found the newest version to be sublime with the improvements to inferred constraints. Still some things I don't like doing in it, but for the most part it is one of my favorite modeling tools for architecture.

What were we talking about?

...increasing a tool's price by 38% is not the way to go when the work produced with the tool is being devalued more and more every year.

yeah, that.

I mostly avoid Autodesk products, get by with Cinema4D and occasional use of SketchUp to translate client files.
