vray light mat

Hi evryone..

 

im having this trouble with a vraylightmat in which the light renders with some strong aliasing.. i read the chaos group guide and followed the instructions to solve the problem but it didnt work! the light source is the rectangle on the roof, and also there´s a dome light in the scene.. here´s the image:

as the guide says: i have to use direct illumination + GI and IR: HSphS: 100, Interp.S: 40.

 

here are the settings i used for the render, its vray 3.4 in 3dsmax 2017:

From your screen shots it seems you are using a lot of custom values, I hope you understand what all those values means, because if you use default values everything should work fine.

 

Having said that, more contrasting areas will make your antialising work harder, in your case the self illuminated material and the ceiling mat. This is more noticeable if you are using a very sharpening antialising such Michelle. I would not recommended at all to use Michelle nowadays. please use VRay lanczos (default value) or Area as Mark mentioned.

 

I know lot of people set the self illuminated mat to match exposure, this is a easy fix but sometimes increase the brightness too much, and that is not good for the antialising. Try to setup manually to a value that make it look almost 100% white you can always ad a little more contrast in post, this will also render faster.

 

I also noticed you checked the clamp value, this indeed could help you with the contrasting edges, but you need to adjust the default value, something lower, 0.8 or so, but be aware this also will reduce your dynamic range.

 

I would rather recommend first, change your antialising and check the box of sub pixel mapping.

 

Again if you reset all your VRay setting to default, adjust your self illuminating material to something not nuclear white, your antialising should not have any problem to work those areas.

thank you.. yes indeed im using a lot of custom values because i,ve been doing trial/error for the past few days.. i started using vray only recently.. all this time been doing fine with mental ray but i wanted to give vray a shot.. so far i like it.. and i think its faster than MR.. but im messing around with the values from what i read in the chaos group docs.. one question: i noticed that by using some of the custom values such as different camera settings, different AA filters and diferent sampling values i get a more "realistic" image than using default settings.. but you say that i should use them (default). is it possible to reach a decent level of realism with default settings?

I have also found that trying to illuminaye the scene with a light matetial isnt the best thing. i use light materialsnto create the glow then use vray lights below them for actual illumination. i get les noise as well.

Yes and not, mostly not.

Realism can be reached using several techniques, not only software buttons combinations. if you are learning to use VRay I would recommend to follow the default workflow of 3.x you only need to concentrate in two values, samples and noise, nothing else. That way you can concentrate in what will really help your image to look better. Better modeling, texturing, shading, illumination, compositions and color correction.

 

Most of the tutorials online for VRay are outdated, the new engine does most of the hard work for you, concentrate to be a good artist not a software geek ;)

 

For instance, all those work around that I mentioned to 'fix' the antialising problem will work but, if you used default values from start you would not have those problems. Only when things are not really working, o you need to go beyond physical values, like glowing glass or fussy water... (being exaggerated here) then is good to spend your time changing settings and experimenting.

Now if you don't have anything better to do, just go ahead and dig around ;)

 

I use VRay almost every day and in very specific time I go beyond default setting with the new engine, it just works.... where I heard that before ;)
