Jon Berntsen
Hi all! I'm trying to set up the XFrogs Groundcover models in our vray-rig, but I'm really having a hard time figuring out how to solve this, as it gives black/not correct backsides and really ugly renderings. Of course it comes with standard materials and not vray, so I'm converting. However, I think it's the model giving me headache. I do realize it has something to do with normals, but how to fix it? The worst solution which would be Shell, with over doubling the polycount, is not working, neighter 2sidedmaterial. I have also tried reset xform. I'm stuck! Suggestions appreciated. Thanks. Matt McDonald
I think some of their models have backface cull turned on and it seems like I've run across a plant or two which had duplicate. co-planar leaves. The solution to the first is to check in the object properties, the solution to the second I'm afraid I don't remember.

These models don't seem optimal.
Jon Berntsen
I've checked normals, all leaves are facing upwards now. Still this happens in the diffuse color pass. Might be the leaves angle, so that the dark areas are actually underneath the leaves. But why isn't the vray2sidedmtl working? What's up with that? Somebody been through this and knows what's going on? :/ Edited June 14, 2017 by chroma
Jon Berntsen
Just updating this thread. I've contacted xfrogs about this issue to see if they have any tricks. Don't let that stop you from filing in your own ideas if you have any. Thanks.
Matt McDonald
When I have issues with front and backside faces on leaves, I find it helpful to strip the material down to just solid red on one side and solid green on the other, turn off translucency and everything else. It might give you an idea what is going on. I also still wonder if there are two leaf objects overlapping. You could go to the element subobject and do a marque select of what you believe to be just one leaf. If it indicates two elements are selected, there is your issue. Though I'm not quite sure how to fix it.
